Xingping Ancient Town Guide: 20-Yuan View & Tips

Xingping Ancient Town Guide 20-Yuan View & Tips

Xingping Ancient Town is the riverside town printed on the back of China’s 20-yuan note, and it is the one stop near Yangshuo where the view still looks like the photograph. This guide is written for travellers who have already shortlisted Yangshuo, are comparing day tours, and want three things settled before they pay: the exact location of the viewpoint, the real cost of the rafts and tickets, and how much time the town actually needs. I have walked this route in October light, in drizzle, and in Golden Week crowds. Below is what changes your decision, and what does not. If you already know you want the raft and the 20-yuan view without queueing at the pier, book the small-group Xingping day tour and keep the morning for the river.

Short answer: three to four hours if you move fast, half a day with a raft, one night if you want the town without groups. Entry is free; the raft is the only real expense — and the 9:30 slot goes first.

Why Xingping Ancient Town Guilin Still Beats the Big-Group Stops

Yangshuo has two versions of itself. One is West Street at 9 pm: neon, e-bikes, bass from three bars. The other is Xingping at 8 am: a woman rinsing vegetables at the stone steps, mist in the karst peaks. Both real. Only one is why you flew here.

Xingping ancient town Yangshuo has been a river settlement for more than 1,700 years, and it looks it. The streets are narrow, the buildings are grey brick and dark timber, and the old opera stage still stands near the main square. Nobody has repainted it into a theme park. That is the point. Most travellers search for Xingping Old Town and land here anyway — same place, two names.

The trade-off is honest: few restaurants, little English, no nightlife beyond the river. Want rooftop bars? Stay in Yangshuo town.

Where Is the 20 Yuan Note Viewpoint in Xingping?

This is the picture that defines Yangshuo Xingping Ancient Town for most visitors, so let me be exact. Walk from the Xingping pier downstream along the paved riverside path, away from the old town gate, for roughly 600 to 800 metres. You will pass the raft moorings, a small beach, and a row of bamboo. When the river bends left and the five pointed peaks line up across the water, stop. You are standing in the frame printed on the 20-yuan note.

The peaks are the Nine Horse Fresco Hill group. Locals call the spot “20 yuan background”. No gate, no ticket, no sign in English — which is why tour buses rarely stop more than ten minutes.

How to stand in the right place

Face the river with the old town over your right shoulder. The note was shot from a low water level, so step down to the stones at the water’s edge. If the far-left peak looks like a thumb, you are 20 metres too far upstream — move down and the frame clicks.

Best light for the Xingping 20 yuan view

Early morning, 6:40 to 8:00, gives mist on the water and empty stones. Late afternoon, after 16:30, gives warm side light on the karst faces. Midday flattens everything and puts a hard white sky behind the peaks. If you only have one slot, take the morning.

How to Get to Xingping Ancient Town from Yangshuo

Three options, and the right one depends on how much you value ninety minutes.

Public bus: cheapest, simplest

Xingping Ancient Town near Yangshuo is only 25 km away, and the minibus is the cheapest link. From Yangshuo bus station, take the Xingping minibus. It costs about ¥8 to ¥10, leaves every 15 to 20 minutes, and takes 40 to 50 minutes. Pay the driver in cash or by Alipay QR. The bus drops you off a five-minute walk from the old town gate. This is what I use when I travel alone.

E-bike or bicycle: best for the rice fields

The ride is 15 kilometres, 60 to 90 minutes depending on stops. The lanes through Fuli are half the reason to come. Rentals run ¥50–¥80 a day. Skip it in heavy rain or heavy traffic.

Private car or tour transfer: best for two or more people

A Didi from Yangshuo town costs ¥80–¥120 and takes 40 minutes. For a couple with luggage, a booked transfer beats two taxi runs and solves the day’s real friction: getting back after the last bus.

If you would rather have the transport, the raft, and the timing handled in one booking, this private Yangshuo day tour with Yulong River rafting is the version I recommend for couples and families: you get a driver who waits, a raft slot that is already reserved, and no queue at the pier.

Xingping Ancient Town Entrance Fee and What You Will Actually Pay

The number that surprises people: the Xingping Ancient Town entrance fee is zero. Walk in, walk the streets, reach the viewpoint, pay nothing. Everything else is optional — prices below are 2026 ranges I paid or saw.

If you want raft, viewpoint, and old street in one afternoon without negotiating each piece

If you want raft, viewpoint, and old street in one afternoon without negotiating each piece, plan your Xingping and Yulong River rafting day to keep the pier queue and the timing off your plate.

How Long to Spend in Xingping Ancient Town

Most people underestimate this and end up leaving just as the light gets good.

Three hours: the minimum that works

Old street, viewpoint, one bowl of rice noodles, back on the bus. Fine as a stop on a longer day. You will miss the raft and arrive with the 10:30 groups.

Half a day: the version I recommend

Arrive at 8:00, viewpoint before the crowds, raft at 9:30, lunch at 11:30, back lanes until 13:00. The schedule that gives you town and river without rushing.

Overnight: for photographers and slow travellers

Staying overnight gets you the river at 6 am, rafts still tied up, water like glass. Guesthouses run ¥180–¥450. The trade-off: three or four kitchens, all closed by 21:00.

If you would rather not gamble on the 9:30 raft selling out, reserve a Xingping raft slot with a small-group day tour and keep the morning for the viewpoint instead of the ticket window.

Xingping Ancient Town Walking Route, Step by Step

This is the route I walk, in order, with realistic timings. This direction puts the viewpoint in soft morning light.

  • Old town gate (0:00). Enter, and walk straight to the river rather than turning into the souvenir lane.
  • Riverside stone steps (0:05). Look back at the town for the classic white-wall, grey-tile frame.
  • Pier and raft moorings (0:10). Note the return times before you walk on.
  • 20-yuan viewpoint (0:20). Stay 20 to 30 minutes; the light changes fast.
  • Back through the old street (0:50). Look for the old opera stage and the wooden shopfronts on the north lane.
  • Laozhai Mountain trailhead (1:15). Forty minutes up if you are fit; skip in heat or rain.
  • Lunch and bus (3:00). Rice noodles near the gate, then the minibus back to Yangshuo.

Best Time to Visit Xingping Ancient Town

By month

April and May bring mist and rain. September and October give clear skies and the best light. July and August are hot and crowded — start at 6:30 and finish by 11:00. December and January are quiet and grey, but the town is yours.

One warning that matters more than any packing tip: avoid Chinese public holidays, especially the first week of October. The viewpoint is 3 metres wide and holds eighty people on those days.

Things to Do in Xingping Ancient Town, and What to Skip

The list here is short, and that is its strength. Do these four, skip the rest.

Do: the raft, the viewpoint, the old street, Laozhai

The Xingping raft float is the most scenic short section on the Li River and passes the fresco hills. The viewpoint is free. The old street takes twenty minutes. Laozhai Mountain is a free forty-minute climb with the best overhead view of the bend — steep, unlit, not for flip-flops.

Skip: the cormorant photo pose and the souvenir gauntlet.

The cormorant fishermen will pose for photos, then ask for ¥20–¥50. It is a living, not a scam — decide before you raise your phone. The souvenir lane sells the same magnets as West Street at twice the price.

If you want the Li River scenery without organising rafts and buses yourself, reserve the Li River highlights tour with transfer and let the pickup and timing be someone else’s problem. It suits travellers with one free day and no appetite for logistics.

What Third-Party Reviews Actually Tell You

Do not trust my impression alone. On Trustpilot, Viator holds 4.4 out of 5 across roughly 332,000 reviews; GetYourGuide sits at 3.9 out of 5. That gap is useful: both booking layers are reliable, and refunds are where complaints cluster.

My rule: read the three-star reviews first. Five-star reviews describe the view you know. Three-star reviews mention the late pickup, the swapped raft, the skipped viewpoint — those decide whether your half-day works.

Five Mistakes I See Every Week

  • Arriving at 11:00. You get heat, crowds, and flat light at the same time.
  • Assuming the 20-yuan viewpoint is signposted. It is not; follow the riverside path downstream.
  • Buying a “Li River cruise” ticket in Yangshuo that never reaches Xingping. Check the pier name before paying.
  • Climbing Laozhai in midday heat with one small bottle of water. It is a real trail, not a staircase.
  • Booking a tour that excludes the raft fare. The difference is ¥215 or more per person.

Still deciding between doing it yourself and joining a group? Compare Yangshuo day tours with the rafting included before you book the bus — the price gap is smaller than most people assume once raft fares are counted.

Before You Go: Three Bookings, One Checklist

Xingping needs no ticket. Everything that goes wrong here is a booking: the raft slot, the ride back, and the order you do them in.

Then read Start with Travel Resources before booking flights or hotels. It is the sequence I use so transport days do not eat scenery days.

Xingping rewards the traveller who arrives early and books one thing ahead. Settle the raft, transfer, and order, and the rest is walking.
